Lyle served 34 years in the Royal Australian Navy and Air Force across operational deployments, aviation, senior command and disruptive innovation.
He commanded international operations in Japan involving nine nations supporting the defence of the Korean Peninsula. He led more than 500 people operating Australia's air and space defence surveillance network. He flew the F-111 and built Number 5 Flight from scratch to establish Australia's medium-altitude, long-endurance uncrewed aircraft capability.
As Director of Plan Jericho, he challenged established assumptions and accelerated new approaches from concept to practical capability.
None of that is relevant because of the titles. It is relevant because of the environments in which he learned to work.

His focus on women's elite sport is informed by experiences across his military career that repeatedly exposed the same problem from different angles: whether women had space to participate, whether systems actually accommodated them, and whether their contribution was visible.
